The City of Edmonton has partnered with Explore Edmonton to develop Edmonton’s Nighttime Economy strategy.  A thriving nighttime economy is vital for job creation, attracting more visitors to Edmonton, and fostering a safe and welcoming city.  As an Indigenous business owner/professional, your voice and candid perspective is important.

Karen Mackenzie

KAREN MACKENZIE, MBA, BSc. is a proud Cree-Métis woman living in Treaty 6.. She is the Co-Founder and President of MacKintosh Canada, an Indigenous owned, international consulting company and PeopleBest Canada, an artificial intelligence company that is a revolutionary, simple, and powerful way to look at what makes success happen inside people, teams, and organizations by providing the data, analytics, and metrics. Business ownership along with academic leadership and senior management positions has led Karen to this important crossroads in our collective societies where co- creation of the future is both important and enabling.

Karen brings her traditional knowledge of Indigenous ways into the contemporary workplace as this wisdom and way of being reflect "wise practices of purpose driven individuals, communities and organizations". Through storytelling she engages audiences to learn about the First Peoples and their gifts and traditional knowledge. Karen sits with the Elder in Residence Program, an exciting new initiative of Indigenous Services Canada and also with the Circle of Elders for Edmonton Catholic Schools, heralded as a wise practice across Canada enabling greater success rates for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit learners. Karen is a former member of the Edmonton Police Commission and the Community Safety and Well-Being Task Force for the City of Edmonton. She is a Senior Advisor and mentor to the Indigenous Women in Community Leadership, Coady Institute, St. Francis Xavier University and was recently appointed as one of two members for Alberta to the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments. Most recently, she was recognized as an Albertan SHEInnovates leader under the Global Innovation Coalition for Change (GICC). She is the Co-Chair of "Honouring Indigenous Peoples" a national Rotary initiative.

Join us on Monday, June 21, with Minister of Indigenous Relations, Hon. Rick Wilson for National Indigenous Peoples Day. Minister Wilson will discuss the importance of engaging with First Nations and Metis communities while also noting how the Government of Alberta is working to ensure the Indigenous workforce is an integral part of Alberta’s economic recovery. Following his formal presentation, guests will have an opportunity to submit questions to Minister Wilson for a dedicated Q&A period.

AKSIS Annual General Meeting

This meeting is for the purpose of attending to the required business of AKSIS as outlined in the enclosed Agenda. The matter of the Special Resolution addressing By Law revisions will also form a portion of the meeting. An election of New Members of the Board will take place. See the attached position vacancies.

AKSIS current by-laws do not accommodate for a virtual meeting, and as such, we are holding this meeting “in-person” with all COVID-19 safety protocols in place. In order for the meeting to proceed, we will require a quorum of 10 attendees. Voting by proxy is also not permissible under the current by-laws.
